Five Signs That Tell You When Your Air Conditioner is Over the Hill:
1. Your energy bills increase as your system dwindles with
age. Compare bills from the same months in the previous year. If your utility
bills are notably higher, suspect your older air conditioner. Today's new air
conditioners are two to three times more efficient than models built 10 years
ago or more.
2. You lower the thermostat, but your home still isn't cool
enough. Older air conditioners seem to run continuously and often still can't
get the home cool enough. Today's new units offer variable speed fans, along
with other innovations to cool your home easily and more economically.
3. Excess humidity in your home. Even though you set your
thermostat at a comfortable level, your home still fees warm. Part of the
problem may be that your older A/C unit is not equipped to remove the excess
humidity form the air. This makes your home feel warmer and can lead to mold
formation. New air conditioners can now extract up to 20 gallons of water a day
from your home's air, leaving you cool, dry and comfortable.
4. Repeated unit failures. As your system ages, coils corrode,
vibrations lead to cracks and leaks, compressors lose efficiency, contactors
and capacitors break down and electrical connections loosen. It's a parade of
costly problems. And even if you are covered by our service contract, you still
have the inconvenience of repeated breakdowns and loss of air conditioning.
5. Decreased airflow. If your system is running but the air coming
out of vents is minimal, time may be taking its toll. Without proper airflow,
it is impossible for your system to do the job effectively.
