Owning a home comes with maintenance responsibilities, and one of the most often overlooked maintenance tasks is cleaning out your home’s air ducts. The biggest reason this task is overlooked is that air ducts are out of sight, plus most homeowners don’t know when they should be cleaned. Here are some of the signs that signal your air ducts need cleaning.
f you notice dust puffs circulating in the air whenever you turn on your home’s A/C system, or you see pet hair or debris trapped in a vent, these may be indicators that the duct system in your house needs a thorough cleaning. Air filters that are covered by dust will not properly circulate air throughout your home easily. It’s a likely sign that your home’s air ducts are clogged with dust, as well. To avoid problems down the road, a good maintenance rule is to have your air ducts cleaned every two to seven years by a professional. While changing your air filters regularly will help cut down on the amount of dust and dander, this won’t protect every single part of your HVAC system.
Signs it’s time to call the HVAC professionals:
Small amounts of human and pet hair, dirt, and dust are normal. However, when the buildup becomes excessive, your air duct system is adversely affected. It’s time to call someone to clean it out. In the long run this will save you aggravation and possibly A/C and heating unit repair expenses, too.
A word of caution. Do not attempt to clean your air ducts by yourself! It is also not a job for someone with the lowest bid and only an air compressor to do the job. Be sure to get bids from professionals that have reputable reviews on websites like Angie’s List, Google, and Yelp. A 2,000-square-foot house will probably cost about $300-$500 to be professionally cleaned. It’s a wise investment that affects the health of you and your family, plus lengthens the life of your A/C system.
